As part of my New Years Resolution, I dug into a couple of classical pieces I stashed away years ago but hadn’t spent much time on, one was Carcassi’s Study No. The index finger and the middle finger alternate rapidly between the first and second string while the thumb articulates a moving bass part underneath. Jake described a technique involving the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger. Seeing Jake Shimabukuro execute the tremolo with such precision spurred my interest in tremolo picking. One can achieve a similar effect with a flat pick by using alternating picking techniques, while another way to achieve the effect is to use a delay pedal. There are multiple ways to obtain this effect other than the fingerstyle approach. For those who may not be familiar with tremolo picking, it is an effect that is created when a note or series of notes are repeatedly picked while a bass part moves underneath. The Ukulele may be most famously associated with Don Ho, which will always remind me of “Tiny Bubbles”. The Ukelele is believed to be of Portuguese origin introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. I hadn’t thought much of the Ukelele and it’s origins before now, so I did a little research. I read an interesting post titled “Ukelele Tremolo Picking Jake Shimabukuro Style”.
